Chapter 254: I Guess I’m Lucky Then...
Kayden waited by the door for Brooke to finish cleaning up, once she was done, he stepped back allowing her to walk out.
Rubbing her hands together she thanked him, "Thank you for helping me out."
Kayden shook his head, "The pleasure is mine. I just wish I got a chance to make that bitch Cassie suffer a bit more."
Brooke sighed, "Believe me, it isn’t worth it. Someone like her never learns, I should know, I’ve lived with her for so long."
"Lived with her?" He began to walk, leading her to his aunt’s room, where a change of clothes awaited her.
Brooke nodded. "Cassie is my sister." She told him.
Kayden blinked twice. "Sister?!"
Brooke halted her steps. "Is it that surprising? I think finding out my newest sponsor is Mr Julian’s son was an even bigger surprise." She pointed out, then resumed her walk.
Still in disbelief, he defended, "I mean, considering how much you two have clashed online, and the obvious hatred she has towards you...wait," He stopped himself, realization suddenly overwhelming him.
"You said Cassie is your sister? Then does that mean Julian is your..."
Brooke caught what he was insinuating and immediately shut him down. "Oh no," she shook her head, "Cassie and I have different fathers." She explained.
For a moment, Kayden felt a bit of relief, but that was swiftly shattered to pieces. ’Maybe it’s because I hate Cassie so much, but if it was Brooke, I think I might’ve been able to stand having her as a sister.’ he thought to himself.
"How can the both of you be sisters and so different? That wench is insufferable." He groaned.
"I’m not surprised, she’s always been spoiled rotten, I have my mother and stepfather to blame for that." She went on to say.
"But still, that bitch deserves what’s coming to her. If I had to live with that wench, I’d make sure to make her life miserable. You should’ve done that, hell, you could still do that!" He egged her on, earning a slight chuckle from Brooke.
It felt good hearing someone else cuss out Cassie.
"Forget about her. I’m more interested in you being a sponsor. Did Mr Julian put you up to it?" She asked.
"No," he tugged on the door handle, and cocked a mischievous grin at Brooke, "I did that just to spite Cassie."
Brooke held back a laugh, unsure if she was meant to take him seriously. Who would throw away all that money just for something that petty?
"Oh you poor thing!" Susan’s voice pierced into her thoughts. Brooke directed her gaze at the older woman who approached her with a worrisome look and two large towels.
"Let’s have you cleaned up and changed out of those." Susan said, her tone gentle and swaying. To Kayden she said, "Ask the maids to get some ointment, we can’t risk her skin having a reaction. And bring the first aid kit too, then have them call the doctor, something could’ve gotten in her eye." The woman shook her head.
"Wait here, I’ll go run you a bath with my special salts!" She dashed for the bathroom.
Brooke tried to stop her,"That’s too much! It was just wine she doused on me. I’m perfectly fine-"
Kayden rested a hand on her shoulder, and slowly moved his head from side to side,"Just give it up Brooke, once aunt Susan sets her mind on something she doesn’t give up." He leaned in and whispered, "Be glad she doesn’t have you bundled up in like ten layers of outfits." He spoke from experience.
Brooke tried to imagine the taller Kayden with his arms sticking out, and the extra padding from the layers of fabric. She snickered, "I guess I’m lucky then."
While the Reginald household was somewhat lively, Thane’s mansion was on edge upon the young master’s arrival. The maids who went out to receive him and the madam all received harsh glares as he trudged into the mansion, in an angry frenzy.
He stormed into his study where Hannah was bathed in sweat, the phone he placed on front of her had switched off and one of the books had fallen from her back.
Her voice low and groggy, she begged, "Please forgive-"
"Get out." He ordered.
Hannah swiftly got up, she closed her eyes and pressed her lips firmly, swallowing the pain from her swollen lower back.
The books fell in a clatter!
"F-Forgive me..." She tried to pick them up, but Thane barked harshly at her.
"I said get out!"
A chill ran up Hannah’s spine. Despite her swollen joints she dashed out of the room and locked the door behind her.
Her heart pounded as she limped down the hallway towards the elevator. Stepping inside, her mind was racing with questions.
What had gotten into him?
Why did he look so angry?
The elevator reached the Grand floor, where Hannah noticed the maids huddled up in twos and threes, their indiscriminate murmurings filled the atmosphere.
Two maids rushed over to where she stood, each hooking her arm over their shoulder, supporting her weight.
"Madam Hannah, everyone has been worried about you! Master Grayson forbade us from cleaning his study for the entire day." One of them informed her.
But Hannah was long past that, if this was the only punishment Thane would give her for her crimes, she was more than happy about that. However she could tell that something was gravely off about the young master.
"Tell me, where is madam Grayson?" She asked, scared that Brooke would see her like this.
But the maids stunned her when they responded, "Have you not heard about what happened to her?"
Hannah furrowed her brows. "What happened to Mrs Grayson?" She demanded.
The maid on her left responded, "That means you didn’t hear about what happened to Mr Gilbert either."
Gilbert? What did he have to do with anything?
She got her answer when the alternating the maid filled her in. "Mrs Grayson was arrested for an attempted murder on Mr Gilbert’s life!"
