Chapter 278: Sadie’s Dilemma

Chapter 278: Sadie’s Dilemma

Thane did not mince words when he demanded, "Explain yourself, what the hell do you mean you don’t know?!"

But Gilbert’s answer did not change. "They kept their identity a secret, used a voice changer for all our calls, and never had us meet in person. I’m sorry, but even I don’t know who exactly in the family it is. But, I’m certain it isn’t Maverick."

"And how can you be so sure about that?" Thane inquired.

"That’s because, I confronted Maverick myself, but he’s in the same predicament as me. He couldn’t have been the suspect." He revealed.

"Predicament? What predicament?" Thane folded his arms.

He answered, "His sister, Anna. She’s going through the same thing as my younger brother. They’re being sold the same drug, by the same supplier, by the Grayson who wants you dead."

Thane recalled the drug that he found at his apartment back home, the same one he had Maverick test. He could confirm that Gilbert wasn’t lying, which meant that all this time Maverick wasn’t the one looking to end his life.

"And? Why did you listen to their demands? Is your loyalty to me that fickle? Not that I care about your motives, whatsoever." He asked, his tone distant.

Gilbert was confused on what exactly Thane wanted to know. On one hand it sounded like he was interested in knowing why he betrayed him, but on the other hand it seemed like he didn’t.

"I know this will sound like a selfish excuse, but my brother has been addicted to the drug. He can’t sleep or eat if he doesn’t take that drug, he also gets reckless and at times rabid. My family was worried when he nearly set himself on fire." He started, but Thane did not seem the least bit fazed.

Gilbert went on, "As it stands, there were not a lot of options available to help him. Save for one, the treatment that only my employer had. It worked as some sort of antidote against the drug. However, that backfired too. My brother quickly got addicted to the antidote, and unlike the drug, the antidote was in smaller circulation."

Thane frowned, a part of him wondering if Maverick had gotten this antidote for Anna.

"My employer made a deal, that if I slipped in those pills to your medication, that they would give me more antidote for my brother..."

Thane scoffed, "So you sold me out for your brother?"

"Young Master, forgive me. I was helpless, he’s just so young, I couldn’t bear to watch him throw his life away like that." He begged, but his words did not reach Thane.

Thane hissed, why did Brooke think this would be a good idea? All he felt was irritation, because he understood where Gilbert was coming from.

If it was to save Brooke he was confident that he would have done much worse than Gilbert did.

"I didn’t mean to do it, But I had no choice please I know I am asking for much but at least spare my family. I am ready to take any form of punishment, as long as my family is safe." Gilbert pleaded.

Thane scoffed and unfolded his arms, "Wait a minute, if you don’t know who it is, then why did you tell Brooke that you knew the identity of my conspirator?"

"Frankly speaking, I was going to tell her who it was I suspected." He said.

"And just who do you suspect?" Thane followed up.

Gilbert took two deep breaths, before uttering the name, "Your uncle, Edward Grayson."

When Brooke finally found Sadie, she was told Sadie was in the her dressing room at the hotel changing into some casual clothes. But when she knocked and tried to come in, she heard the sound of something crashing, followed by a broken glass sound!

"Sadie! Are you okay?!" Brooke called out, banging on the door.

For a half minute, no one answered, and the room went dead silent. Brooke panicked, she turned to go get someone with a master key for help. But Sadie opened the door and came out, looking disheveled and tired.

"Sadie, are you okay?" Brooke asked, watching her wipe her face.

Sadie cracked a smile. "Of course."

But Brooke insisted, "You look drained out, what’s bothering you? You can tell me." As she voiced that thought out, she realized that Sadie hadn’t said a word about her brother for a while.

What was he up to? Had he finally left her alone?

Brooke reached for Sadie’s shoulder but she dodged her touch, her polite smile still plastered on her face. "I’m fine, really. You should head home while there aren’t any reporters outside looking for a scoop." She told her.

"Are you sure? I can stay with you, or you could come with me, I’ll have the driver take you to your apartment. We have so much catching up to do." Brooke could just see that something about Sadie was different, but she couldn’t point out what.

But Sadie would not budge. "I think I’ll sleep at the hotel tonight, I don’t want to go home and risk having any reporters waiting home for me." She said.

Brooke’s jaw dropped. "Sadie has that been happening to you?" She recalled Lucas telling her that Sadie had a lot on her plate.

A twinge of guilt came over Brooke as she realized her stubbornness could be harming Sadie the most.

But Sadie smiled, "I’m fine. You should go get some rest, oh, and congratulations, I’m glad you’re still in this movie." Before Brooke could get a word in, Sadie slipped back into her hotel room and closed the door being her.

Brooke contemplated trying again to get through to Sadie but ultimately decided it was best to give her space. She reached into her bag for her phone to alert the driver to come pick her up. But, she was overwhelmed by the new online buzz that had started in the last hour....
