Chapter 270: The First Give You Ever Gave Me

The driver who waited for Brooke to return, but she hadn’t. His phone rang, he swiftly pulled it out of his jacket to see it was his boss calling.

He answered, his chest tight, "Good morning sir-"

"Where is my wife?" Thane demanded over the phone.

The driver gulped, "She’s changing clothes as we speak."

"Once she finishes, I want her in front of me in less than an hour. Am I clear?" He asked about to end the call.

"Forgive me sir, but Mrs Grayson has refused to come home. She says she’ll stay at the hospital-" he was saying but Thane cut him off.

"I told you to bring my wife home, I also told you to protect her at all times. Do you need me to punish you too?"

The driver lowered his head, "I am sorry, I will bring Mrs Grayson home at once!"

Thane warned sternly, "If a single strand of her hair is missing, I’ll make you and your family suffer immensely." He said then disconnected the call.

The driver was consumed in fear. He had less than a hour and Mrs Grayson still hadn’t returned. He thought to start a search for her, but just as he held that thought, the young man from earlier emerged out of the hospital room, searching for the young master’s wife.

He recognized him and walked over, "Where is your boss? Where is Brooke?" He asked.

"I can’t seem to find her, she left to change and hasn’t come back...."

"What?!" Kayden yelled, "Have people search for her! Do you have her picture?" He demanded.

The driver shook his head. The young master would not let any of the help have anything related to his wife on their phones and he made sure of it on a daily.

Kayden hissed, "I didn’t see that wench Cassie go home last night, Brooke could be in danger. Let’s split up and search for her!"

"Fine. Take my number so you can call me if you find her." He quickly gave Kayden his number, then they both split up to find Brooke.

Kayden went into the elevator to search the grand floor, while the driver covered the same floor.

He immediately went to the washroom to start the search, and thankfully he heard Brooke calling for help from the inside.

"Mrs Grayson, can I come in?!" He hollered from outside.

"Yes! Please! Help me! I can’t get up!" With those words heard he opened the door and barged inside, where he found the young master’s wife on the ground, covered in red liquid. She looked to be crawling on the floor, and in pain.

She raised her head, and the driver could not help but be in awe of her beauty. Even when in tears, she had a strange allure to her. He however quickly pulled his thoughts out of the gutter and picked her off the floor.

He carried her into the second elevator and used the back exit, where he was sure not too many people used. He had parked a car there and bought breakfast for Mrs Grayson to eat.

But after he helped her to a seat, she told him she had no appetite and wanted to rest.

"Mrs Grayson, Kayden was searching for you. Do I call and tell him I’ve found you-"

"No! Just...just take me home." she pleaded, curling herself up into a ball in the backseat, sobbing into the chair.

*Flashback*

Brooke returned to Luther’s house, but not everything was the same.

For one, the law that Cassie couldn’t hit Brooke was changed to Cassie couldn’t hit Brooke in places that were noticeable. As long as Ethan didn’t see it, then it was allowed.

Of course, Brooke didn’t take this lying down. The moment Ethan came home to see her, she reported that Cassie had stolen a gift he gave her and scratched Brooke when she tried to stop her.

But Ethan’s response shocked her. "I never knew you were that greedy, Brooke. It was just a bag, I’ve given you so many, couldn’t you share just one with your sister?"

Brooke was stunned, "It isn’t about the bag...I...I just...it was the first gift you gave me-"

He cut her off, "I’m tired, it’s been a long day at the office, have a maid make me something since you can’t handle that." He said, sending her out of the room.

Though shocked, she decided to let Ethan relax. After all, she would have other chances to explain herself properly to him. Cassie could have everything, she didn’t care. But the sentimental items, she didn’t want to let those go.

She wanted things that would remind her of Ethan’s love for her.

But his words were sharp and lacked any empathy. Ever since he met with Luther and they spoke in private after dinner, she felt something about Ethan had changed.

"Mrs Halton? Are you alright?" A voice piped up from behind her.

Brooke looked over her shoulder at Zara, one of the recent hires at the mansion. With Cassie’s popularity slowly rising, and her husband’s business growing, they had decided to get more staff to wait on the house.

Brooke forced a smile. "Yeah, I’m just tired is all."

Zara sighed, "You should relax more, just call for me and I’ll come running to help you." She said.

Brooke smiled, genuinely this time. "You know, you’re the only one who calls me that." She pointed out.

Zara who had also noticed couldn’t help but say, "You are the lady of the house, of course I’d call you that way. But there is something weighing on my mind Mrs Halton."

Brooke noticed her shift in tone. "What is it?"

"She responded, "Your sister, miss Cassie. She acts too...chummy with your husband. I advise that you keep a close eye on her, I fear she has indecent motivations towards Mr Halton."

But Brooke played off her worries with a laugh. "Zara, it’s alright. I know you’re worried but there isn’t anything for me to be scared of. I can see Cassie has impure thoughts towards my husband, but I trust Ethan completely. He would never do anything to betray my trust..."
