"She's dead."
Shang Qi's voice choked with emotion as he reached this point.
He had searched for an entire week, enduring hunger and thirst, amidst the wandering hordes of zombies and mountains of corpses.
Finally, he found her. He found the remains of his A Ling.
All that was left for him were scattered bones, marked with countless bite marks.
He could identify A Ling's remains among the pile because of a wound on her left shoulder.
It was from when they were out together, and she had taken a blade attack meant for him from another ability user. The blade had sunk deep into her bone. Even though he had later healed the wound with his healing art, the deep gash in the bone was a lasting mark.
He knelt in the yellow sand, clutching A Ling's remains, surrounded by zombies.
Torrential rain poured down, washing over something.
He hadn't truly intended to leave her. He only wanted to handle a hidden threat without her worrying.
But he never expected this separation to be eternal.
If he had known it would end like this, he would never have left her, not even if it meant dying with her.
Instead of leaving her alone to face fear, despair, and pain...
Hearing this, Gu Shangse's mood also turned somber. "No wonder we met a survivor named Han Xu on the way to Lu City, and Su Ling had such intense hatred for him. It turns out she thought Han Xu killed you, and she wanted revenge for you."
Now, everything was clear.
Whether it was Sunshine or Han Xu, they were all about settling past debts in this life.
Thinking of this, Gu Shangse narrowed his eyes slightly and suddenly looked at Shang Qi. "The rebirth of you two, was it your doing?"
Shang Qi grunted. He drew on his cigarette, gazing at the pitch-black sea, listening to the sound of waves crashing on the shore. "My ability is Devour. I consider it a rather monstrous ability. Very few people in the doomsday possess this ability; I am one of them."
"Before I met A Ling, when dealing with those who wanted me dead, I frequently used this ability to devour their powers and make them my own. There was one ability I remember vividly: it could defy heaven and change fate, turning the tide. But the price was that the user had to sacrifice their life to fulfill the salvation of another."
Gu Shangse understood. He remained silent, continuing to listen to Shang Qi.
"A Ling died, and I had no will to live. So, I sacrificed my life to resurrect A Ling. As for myself, I fed my body to the zombies and activated the formation." Shang Qi spoke of his own death with a detached indifference. "Actually, I wasn't sure if it would succeed back then, but people always need something to hold onto, don't they?"
"Fortunately, I won the gamble. And I was lucky. When A Ling found me, I actually remembered everything." Shang Qi smiled, and when he mentioned Su Ling, his otherwise indifferent eyes were filled with tenderness. "Thank goodness I remembered. If I hadn't, how heartbroken she would have been."
Gu Shangse had now understood the past and present lives of Shang Qi and Su Ling.
His focus now shifted to the group of villains Shang Qi had mentioned. "Those people, have you dealt with them in this life?"
"No." Shang Qi exhaled smoke slowly. "I only remembered after meeting A Ling. Although the trajectory of this life differs from the previous one, the general path remains the same. I am currently following the path of my past life."
"The only difference is meeting A Ling and you all earlier. As for the group who wanted me dead, I only dealt with a third of them. The remaining forces are most likely still searching for me."
