Chapter 1408: 【1408】Collapsed Family

Xie Wanying and the other person entered the ward area and heard the heart monitor alarm sounding at the end of the corridor. Without thinking, they ran towards the source of the alarm.

Arriving at the ward, they first encountered a family member of another inpatient in the room, carrying belongings and walking out. The family member asked the nurse for help to temporarily move the patient to an extra bed, otherwise it would be impossible to sleep for the whole night. Not knowing when the neighboring bed’s resuscitation would end, and if the patient died, it would also have a significant psychological impact on the other patient.

All that was left in the ward were doctors and nurses involved in the resuscitation, including the on-duty doctor, the patient’s attending doctor, interns, graduate students, doctoral students, etc. A large group of over a dozen people crowded into the narrow ward space, causing the entire indoor air to become incredibly stagnant and filled with anxiety.

Just as Xie Wanying and the others were about to step into the ward, faint cries from the other end of the corridor entered their ears.

“Sob sob sob, sob sob sob—”

It was the voice of Chen Chengran’s mother.

“There, there, don’t cry.”

Chen Chengran’s father was comforting his wife, his voice brimming with exhaustion. A man watching helplessly as his son was about to die, with his wife crying; his heart was about to collapse, and he felt as sick as his son, with no strength left to speak.

“What if he dies? The doctor suggested we prepare mentally—he just got transferred—” Chen Chengran’s mother asked her husband intermittently while crying, her words filled with despair.

The couple initially thought the transfer of hospitals would bring their son hope for survival, but unexpectedly, their son’s condition deteriorated immediately upon transfer, and the doctors said it was too late to treat.

This question left Chen Chengran’s father unable to answer his wife. If the doctors couldn’t do anything, what could he do?

“By the way, isn’t his classmate a doctor?” Chen Chengran’s mother lifted her head and asked her husband, “When they admitted him today, his classmate said he would accompany our son through the treatment and that there was hope for Chengran’s recovery. Where is the classmate who said that?”

“You’re talking about Doctor Pan, right? He is indeed Chengran’s classmate, but he’s just a medical student,” Chen Chengran’s father reminded his wife to be clear-headed, not to take the comforting words of a medical student seriously.

The teacher said it was hopeless; how could a student possibly save the patient?

“Chengran believes in him. Chengran said that his classmate is really smart, he was top of the class back then, and whatever he says is not a lie, he’s not the kind of person who likes to deceive,” Chen Chengran’s mother recalled seriously every word her son had said before.

Upon hearing the classmate’s mother speak like this, Pan Shihua, standing at the ward door, seemed to shiver: the classmate said he believed in him, but what could he do?

Seeing that Student Pan was under too much pressure, Xie Wanying brushed past him and entered the ward first to inquire about the patient’s condition. She pushed her way through the crowd and found Doctor Jiang, calling out, “Teacher Jiang.”

Standing at the foot of the patient’s bed, along with other doctors focusing on the patient’s condition, Doctor Jiang hadn’t noticed them come in. Hearing her voice, he turned his head in surprise, “Why did you come?”

“The patient is a classmate of my classmate,” Xie Wanying briefly explained concisely.

Doctor Jiang subsequently noticed Pan Shihua standing at the door. Seeing his pale face made Doctor Jiang sigh: if known earlier, he wouldn’t have called him.

Some students are too kind-hearted, and teachers fear this—afraid that the student will be overwhelmed, and too heartbroken to become a doctor.
