Chapter 1813: Chapter 1806: Desperate Freedom 2
The young girl walked through a chaotic and desolate street, quietly passing countless soldiers. As she reached the corner, she seemingly glanced back unintentionally, her gaze briefly stopping on the man following her for a second, then she continued toward her destination as if she hadn’t noticed anything.
Xu Haishui did not know that he had already been discovered by her. Carrying a bag in both hands, he continued to follow her at a distance like any ordinary passerby.
From the moment he discovered her and started following her, about five or six minutes had passed. Quickly, Xu Haishui saw a man standing at the corner of the street in the distance, dressed in a cloak just like his, tightly wrapped.
He furrowed his brow in confusion because the aura surrounding that man was strange, not inciting the slightest bit of appetite for zombies. It was like seeing some equipment on a random street, with no connection to food in any way. This guy wasn’t human, nor was he a zombie.
Because he couldn’t detect any zombie aura on that man.
Xu Haishui slowed his steps, glanced to the left and right, and finally placed the items in his hands into a relatively hidden bush, then continued to follow as if nothing had happened.
The person the girl was looking for was this strange man. Upon reaching him, she stopped, lifted her head to look at the face beneath his cloak, it seemed so familiar, yet so unfamiliar.
"Are you okay?" the man asked, his voice devoid of any human emotional fluctuations. As his voice rang out, the girl shifted her gaze and lowered her head.
"Not very well."
"Is there anything we need to do?"
"No."
"Okay..." The man said these two words like a machine, then turned to leave. However, at this moment, the girl said, "I’m planning to give up."
The man retracted his step just taken, turned back to look at her.
"Why?"
"I just can’t see hope. Somehow, it’s already been such a long time. Some things I should learn to let go of."
"We can do anything for you, even die." The man seemed to be trying to hold onto something. Although his voice carried no emotion, the indifferent tone contained a slight struggle.
"There’s no need. I’m tired; I think he is too. He has been exhausted for a lifetime; let’s let him rest well."
"We can succeed..."
"You don’t need to comfort me. I’m no longer a child. We can’t succeed. Let him rest in peace."
"That’s what I wanted to say." The girl forced a smile. She waved her hand, stepped back and turned around. The moment she took her first step, the cloaked man reached out and grabbed her wrist.
"Then what... do we do?" The man’s voice became much weaker, and his other hand hanging down trembled slightly. His words left the girl stunned; she turned around to look at his face, wanting to say something but no words came out, only shaking her head. She didn’t even know what to do herself, so how could she know what they should do?
Tears welled in her eyes, glistening within her sockets. At this moment, a building collapsed in the distance, and a strong wind blew, lifting the shoulder cap from the man’s cloak, revealing Ning Tianlang’s face.
Just as her tears were about to fall, she held back. She kept a firm attitude on her face and said, "You settle him well, make sure he’s in a place where nobody can disturb him. As for you, I won’t take away your lives; I give you freedom. Go wherever you want, do whatever you want. Go and see, the world outside is vast and magnificent. Also, don’t consider yourselves as outcasts, you are no different from normal people. You... are also human."
"If there’s nothing you want to do or see, you can also choose self-extinction, I apologize."
"Ning Tianlang" said nothing, his gaze dull like a robot, gripping her hand tightly. Even though he had no emotion, he was reluctant to see her leave. But eventually, the girl mercilessly pulled her hand away.
"Alright, I’m leaving. We won’t meet again in the future; you don’t have to find me. You won’t find me, this is goodbye." The girl reattached the shoulder cap blown off by the wind, then turned and stepped away. No matter what he said from that moment, she would not look back.
The wind blowing toward her was somewhat cold, carrying the heavy scent of kerosene dust; she quickened her pace, wanting to leave quickly, but time seemed infinitely slowed down. With each step she took, she could clearly feel the sound of her footsteps.
Just as she was about to disappear around the corner from his sight, she heard his voice!
"Daughter..."
The moment those two words entered her ear, she instantly denied the decision she had previously made. She turned back once more, looked at him, and "Ning Tianlang" had already taken off the shoulder cap. His expression was the same as before, with no emotion, eyes equally dull as before, but the two words he spoke carried a tremor. He was trying hard to infuse a bit of human emotion into his words, but such a task as simple as drinking water for normal people was insurmountably difficult for him!
Thus, his voice became hoarse.
He reached out a hand to her, but it trembled violently, the five fingers clenching and releasing, seemingly wanting to grasp something but could only hold onto air!
Yet upon seeing the girl turn back, he seemed content, slowly withdrawing his hand, then touching his waist. In the next moment, two red lights appeared and flashed rapidly on his chest and abdomen.
Beep beep beep beep beep...
The flesh on his face began melting at an incredible speed, like ice cream under the scorching sun. In a short time, his body became a puddle of mud, the clothes and shoulder cape cloak devoid of support fell to the ground.
Amidst the flesh turned to mud, some peculiar mechanical devices could be seen.
Simultaneously, a man sitting idly on a high chair in a tavern, a man standing in an unknown corner of a mall unmoved, a man slowly closing the hatch in a dark black laboratory, and countless "Ning Tianlangs" in petri dishes all turned into a puddle of inorganic matter in this instant!
All the orderly watchmen silently melted away in this world, with occasional passersby merely mistaking it for some heartless person throwing soaked paper from the building.
The freedom she gave was an unimaginable despair for these orderly watchmen.
They were born for her and died for her.
This scene left the girl unable to hold back her tears any longer, her heart seemed repeatedly stabbed, the excruciating pain causing her to forget anything beyond this moment.
She couldn’t express her feelings then, but it also freed her from any concerns, allowing her to confidently embrace her destiny!
Soon after, the soldiers around noticed the sudden anomaly of these "Ning Tianlangs" and quickly surrounded her, forcing the girl to suppress her grief and leave this place.
Two minutes later, after confirming no other soldiers were following her, the girl stepped into a dead end and stopped. She looked at the pitted low wall, eroded by the elements, in front of her. Her expression turned cold at some unknown point.
"Have you seen enough? If you’ve seen enough, come out."
