Chapter 734: Chapter 488 Strange Behavior

The first update today is here, more to come.

————————

“You… you’re so despicable! Pretending to leave just to see me embarrass myself? That’s really low!” Huang Baoquan glared at Song Xiaoyu hatefully, jerked off the white coat he was wearing, threw it onto the table, and turned to walk out.

“Wait a minute…” Song Xiaoyu blocked him, nodded toward the wet spot on his crotch, “Do you really plan to go out like this? Or rather, does Director Huang really intend to go out and disgrace himself like this?”

Huang Baoquan snorted coldly, “Isn’t this what you wanted?!”

“You’re thinking too much. I just came back to get something…” Though she said this, Song Xiaoyu didn’t move aside but continued, “A real man should own up to what he does; you must tell me why you’ve been so enthusiastic about Wang Jing these past few days.

She’s my apprentice and my good friend’s niece. Both personally and publicly, I can’t just overlook this. If Director Huang doesn’t want to respond, I can ask Director Xu to step in.”

Huang Baoquan’s pale face turned bright red, “To actually use the director to threaten me, Song Xiaoyu, I didn’t expect you to be such a person. I despise your despicable actions!”

Song Xiaoyu looked at him indifferently, “If your conscience is clear, would you need to act like this? You should know who the despicable one is, no need to keep reiterating it!”

His gaze fell on the stain at his crotch, Huang Baoquan decided to swallow his anger for now, “I like Wang Jing’s aunt; there, are you satisfied now? Can you give me my clothes so I can wear them and go out?”

Song Xiaoyu nodded, then counter-asked, “Wearing women’s clothes, that’s really okay?”

“Bastard!” Huang Baoquan yelled, his face cold as he walked out, while Chuxia, who had been eavesdropping at the door, quickly straightened up, but still faced Huang Baoquan directly. She showed no consciousness of having been caught and waved her hand, “Hello, Director Huang.”

Glaring at her fiercely, Huang Baoquan turned and walked toward his office.

Standing a bit farther away, Wang Jing burst out laughing, stepped forward, and rubbed her head, “That’s so naughty of you. Do you think he can take it? You clearly want to infuriate him to death!”

“If he could die from this, then his mental tolerance is terribly weak…” Chuxia stretched her head out toward the office door just as Song Xiaoyu came out with her glasses and tapped her on the forehead, “What are you sneaking around for?”

“Teacher, you and my senior sister are bullying me!” Chuxia protested, touching her forehead, “I was a genius; what if you turned me dumb just now? Could you afford that?”

“If that made you dumb, is your head made of paper?”

“Uh…” Apparently, that was her mimicking how she had spoken earlier. But just now, Song Xiaoyu had been impressive, so Chuxia eagerly gave her a thumbs up, “Teacher, the way you spoke just now was so… enchanting!”

She wanted to say it was ‘cool’, but then thought, people from this era probably wouldn’t understand what ‘cool’ meant, and she’d have to explain it all, so she replaced the word ‘cool’ with the word ‘enchanting’.

Qin Mei was already able to sit up, and when the three entered, she was bored staring at the ceiling.

Sister Huang was caring for her today, “Hello, Director Song, Doctor Xiao Wang, Doctor Xiao Lin.” She greeted them one by one.

A slight smile appeared on Song Xiaoyu’s face, “Hello.” She really liked Sister Huang, a very diligent and responsible woman, straightforward in speech, unlike Liang Hongyan, who would hide half of what she meant in her words, making her feel like there was cotton stuffed in her heart.

“Hello, Director Song.” Qin Mei also snapped back to reality, first greeted Song Xiaoyu, then turned her gaze to Chuxia and Wang Jing to greet them, with Chuxia being the first one she greeted.

While Song Xiaoyu was examining Qin Mei, Wang Jing leaned close to Chuxia and whispered, “She still has hopes for your Uncle Three, did you notice that? Sister Huang greeted me first, but she greeted you first. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not competing for favor, but this tiny detail shows she cares more about your opinion.”

“You’ve become smarter than before, although it’s not necessarily so. I’ve helped her a lot, and because of Wang Fong, you haven’t been able to visit much recently. Besides, I was the first to notice her illness, she’s showing her gratitude to me, it has nothing to do with my Uncle Three.”

Wang Jing rolled her eyes at Chuxia and said nothing more. She felt uncomfortable, the kind that comes from not being trusted.

Chuxia sensed her change in emotion, but it wasn’t appropriate to say much in the hospital room, so she just pinched her and went over to watch closely how Song Xiaoyu examined the patient.

The abdominal suture, though still scary like a centipede, had completely deflated, indicating Qin Mei’s excellent physical condition. Song Xiaoyu handled the wound with scissors, checked it, and nodded satisfactorily, “Not bad, no sign of oxidation. She can move back to the general ward tomorrow, and she won’t need IV fluids tonight.” Turning to Sister Huang, she said, “After moving back to the general ward, help the patient to walk slowly for half an hour each day; it’s good for her recovery.”

“Yes,” Sister Huang’s answer was slightly hesitant; she worried that the wound would hurt badly, but since the doctor had said so, she felt embarrassed to voice her concerns.

As it turned out, she had indeed worried too much. When they moved her back to the general ward the next day to help Qin Mei out, aside from walking slowly and feeling a slight heaviness in her stomach, she experienced no other discomfort.

Huang Li, worried there might be a problem, hurried to ask Song Xiaoyu and only after receiving a definite answer did she feel relieved, and returned to the ward to care for Qin Mei.

The next day, it was Liang Hongyan’s turn to stay by the bed. Before she could even help Qin Mei out of the ward, she panicked and collapsed to the ground. Qin Mei reflexively tried to help her and caused her wound to bleed.

Liang Hongyan was terrified. She tried to stand up but couldn’t, so she crawled outside screaming for help. Everyone inside was stunned by her actions. By the time they reacted, she had already crawled into the corridor. Passersby, assuming she was a patient, hurried toward the nurse station to report that a patient was crawling out asking for help.

The general ward where Qin Mei was staying was previously reserved for her. The old man previously in the next bed was still there, and though he was also a patient and quite elderly, he was very observant. He noticed Qin Mei frowning and quickly prodded his daydreaming son, “Go call Doctor Song quickly!”

The dazed man immediately took off running. In his panic, he stepped directly onto the struggling Liang Hongyan’s leg as he left the doorway, almost tripping himself, and then staggered a few steps before running non-stop toward the doctor’s office.

When Song Xiaoyu arrived at the ward with her two apprentices, Liang Hongyan had already been carried back to the ward by nurses and placed on an empty bed. The nurse, who was just about to seek a doctor, saw her come in and immediately sighed in relief, “Director Song, this comrade can’t stand or walk, please check her condition.”

As Song Xiaoyu was busy treating Qin Mei’s wound, she said, “Go ahead then.” A few nurses then filed out and also dispersed the relatives who had gathered at the door to watch the commotion.

After treating Qin Mei’s wound, Song Xiaoyu looked at her sternly, “Didn’t I tell you that you couldn’t bend over for two days? Did you just ignore my words?”

“I…,” glancing at Liang Hongyan who had just gotten off the bed, Qin Mei sighed in relief but embarrassingly explained, “I saw Sister Liang suddenly collapse and forgot out of fright.”

The old man in the next bed quickly said, “Director Song, what Little Qin said is true, I can vouch for her.”

Song Xiaoyu’s lips curled into a smile, “Uncle, you seem to get along very well with Little Qin.”

“Haha…” the old man laughed heartily, “We should help each other.”

The old man’s son’s lips twitched. In his memory, his father was never one to help others. The old man was terribly temperamental and had raised him and his sister with strict disciplines.

“What happened with you?” Song Xiaoyu turned to the recovered Liang Hongyan, frowning, “To end up like this while caring for a patient; you really are an eye-opener.”

Liang Hongyan’s face was beet red, and she stammered with a sobbing tone for a while, but Song Xiaoyu couldn’t make out what she was saying.

Song Xiaoyu, straightforward by nature, disliked such behavior and unconsciously raised her volume, “Can you please articulate the reason clearly? How can anyone dare let you take care of patients if you are like this?”

“I…I…I…” Liang Hongyan’s volume increased, but with trembling lips, she couldn’t form a coherent sentence.

“Forget it,” Song Xiaoyu waved her hand and turned to Chuxia, “Call your third uncle and have him send someone else to take care of her.”

Qin Mei quickly said, “No need, Doctor Song, I should be able to move around soon. We don’t need someone to stay overnight, having Sister Huang bring me three meals will suffice.”

“My sister can help in the evening too,” the old man’s son chimed in.

“Ho-ho-ho…” Liang Hongyan, out of desperation, sounded like a bellows, but still couldn’t speak clearly, her tears rolling down her cheeks.

It took a while before Song Xiaoyu and the others left. The ward was filled with strange glances towards her, making it unbearable for her to stay any longer. She dropped her head, apologized to Qin Mei, grabbed her bag, and headed for the door, then added, “I will let Sister Huang know to come over.”

Although Qin Mei wasn’t close to Liang Hongyan, having spent the past few days together, she found her sometimes uncomfortably formal but now felt pity seeing her in this condition, “Sister Liang, if there’s anything troubling you, can you tell me about it?”

“No… nothing,” Liang Hongyan replied before quickly running away.

Meanwhile, Chuxia was on the phone with Zhou Shanping. Regardless of whether a replacement was needed, she still had to inform Zhou Shanping of Liang Hongyan’s peculiar behavior that day.

As Song Xiaoyu had just questioned, whether it was a physiological or psychological illness, early treatment was essential. (To be continued.
