Chapter 295: An Unsettling Feeling
Axel sat Jen on her bed, he passed her a bottle of water and helped her take a sip. Once her breathing stabilized, he asked, "Now, tell me what you mean by Ethan was married to Brooke?"
Jen inhaled sharply, calming her tensed nerves. "Actually, it’s not that I knew he was married to Brooke specifically, I knew he had a wife, and that they had a divorce. I had only seen her once, she sat at the back of Ethan’s car, and it wasn’t even for a full five seconds."
"You used to work with Brooke in the past, right? Is it possible she was hiding from you?" He suggested.
Jen huffed, "Ethan had a number of private investigators try to find his wife, I was the one responsible for getting feedback from them. However, they all reported no success in finding her."
"But Brooke’s been making waves online, there’s no way Ethan hasn’t been able to find her all this time." He pointed out, folding his arms across his stomach.
"And what’s this about you forgetting? How possible is that?" Axel interrogated.
Jen shook her head, her grip on the water bottle tightened, "That I don’t know. If I’m being honest, I have been having some dizzy spells and panic attacks ever since..." she stopped mid sentence.
Axel raised a brow, "Ever since?"
She gulped, there seemed to be no use hiding this from the detective. "Ever since Ethan Halton had his way with me. I remember lashing out at Avery the next time I saw her, ever since I drank with him, I’ve been feeling...strange."
"Hey?!" He got down on one knee, his hands fell to her shoulders, "Do you think it’s possible that the bastard could’ve been drugging you?" He demanded, a wave of realization splashed across his face.
Jen’s heart skipped a beat. "What?!"
After Cassie finished eating, she had Hannah film her unboxing the items she got earlier from their shopping spree. Serena had tried to come in, but Cassie had her sent away.
"Oh? It seems you aren’t completely useless, you know how to take good videos. Something my worthless last assistant couldn’t do." Cassie observed, watching the videos Hannah had taken.
Hannah flashed her a grin, "Is that a compliment madam Cassie?" She teased.
Cassie scoffed and folded her arms, "It isn’t bad to throw a bone at a dog ever now and then." Just as she said that, a knock on her door was heard. A maid came in, and announced that Scott had returned.
On cue, Cassie got up to leave. She turned to Hannah, "You can get out now. I’ll have you called out when I need you."
Her eyes on Cassie’s phone sitting on her bed, Hannah asked, "But it’s just six o’clock, why am I being dismissed so early? Did I do something wrong?"
Cassie frowned, "Who said you could question my decision?! I already said you can leave, don’t make me repeat myself!"
’This bitch. There must be something she doesn’t want me hearing if she’s sending me back so early. Guess it’s best not to push it.’ Hannah thought, whilst she gathered her things.
"My apologies miss Cassie-" but Cassie did not wait to hear her apology, she left with the maid downstairs, leaving her phone on the bed.
Hannah immediately made for the bed, she reached for Cassie’s phone. She was just about to reach into her bag for the replica, when she heard a voice pipe up behind her.
"What are you doing over there?" Serena asked, perched by the open door.
Hannah rolled her eyes where Serena couldn’t see her, then sharply turned around, a polite smile plastered on her face. "Miss Cassie forgot her phone, I was just going to give-"
Serena snatched the phone out of Hannah’s grip, "There’s no need for that. A poor bitch like you has probably never seen a model like this before. Who knows how desperate you could get?" Serena laughed.
Hannah laughed, her humourless tone catching Serena off guard. Why was the wench laughing when she was being made fun of?
Hannah reached for Serena’s face, making the woman back away so quickly, she tripped! On the floor, her angry gaze found it’s way to Hannah’s condescending grin.
She reached for Serena’s head and picked up some lint, "I was just helping you ma’am, there was no need to get so startled. First your nose and now your back, old timers really tread carefully...you never know what could happen." She said in a sinister tone.
"You-" Serena pointed at Hannah, her eyes teary with rage, but Hannah flashed her a sheepish smile.
"Goodbye ma’am, I’ll see you tomorrow." She greeted, then left the mansion.
Serena was so troubled by Hannah that she went into her bedroom, took a bath and then changed out of her clothes. She applied some oils to her skin, in hopes to get the assistant’s evil stench off her. Once she had finished, she went downstairs, where Scott and Cassie were impatiently waiting.
"Serena what the hell?! It’s been an hour!" Scott scolded as she took a seat at the table.
Serena cracked a nervous grin, "Don’t be like that, a woman must keep herself clean-"
"Stop with the bullshit already!" Cassie snapped, she turned to her uncle, "So? Why did you have us come here to meet? I even had to come up with some bullshit that I missed this house to get the old man to let me stay the night." She said.
Scott pinched his temple, "I wouldn’t have called for this meeting if this wasn’t important. I’ve had my people look for Sarah, but she still hasn’t been found."
Cassie rolled her eyes, "How is that important? Since when did you become such a good brother?"
Scott groaned, "She’s been missing since the day of Susan’s accident! Don’t you think that’s strange? She was supposed to tail Susan and then swap out the DNA results. But ever since the accident, we haven’t heard jack shit from Sarah!"
