Chapter 265: Her Perfect Escape
The doctor informed them that Julian was out of any danger, apparently the stab wound was shallow. The doctor also said it was okay to see him, but gave instructions that only two people at a time could do so.
"Are you sure you won’t see him now?" Susan asked.
Brooke nodded, "He’s your family, I can wait till later." She said, although a part of her wanted to see Julian and apologize for what Cassie did to him.
She waved politely as Kayden and Susan went into his hospital room. On cue, the elevator on that floor open, and out of it came the driver that Thane had sent to follow her.
"Here, you forgot this back at the mansion." He said, handing Brooke her phone and purse. "And here, you can change into this." He passed her newly purchased clothes.
"Thank you." She said, then turned her phone on, a part of her hoping to see several missed calls from her husband.
A frown painted her face when she saw no calls and not even a single text message from him. ’Is he being serious?’ she couldn’t believe her eyes that her husband could give no damn about her not coming home.
She scoffed, "Fine, have it your way." She passed the phone and purse back to him, "I’m going to freshen up, please look after my belongings."
The driver responded, "Mrs Grayson, we should head back home immediately-"
Brooke shook her head, "We will, I just want to see him before I do."
"But Mrs Grayson, the young master will be furious with you."
Furious? The thought made her laugh. He didn’t even care enough to call her once. She had a feeling that Thane had sent the driver with her so he could communicate with him instead of her.
She balled her fists, ’That’s too much, isn’t it Mr Grayson?’ beneath her anger was sadness, but Thane had gone and done something he couldn’t reverse. He had come into her life and created something Brooke never knew.
"I’m seeing Mr Julian, he’s the one who helped me out of prison, so if course I’m not going to just abandon him." She insisted, "Tell your boss that I’ll be home in the afternoon." She said then marched away to the nearest restroom.
Thane had invented Brooke’s Ego, which was a luxury she always felt she could never afford.
*Flashback*
"What is wrong with you?! I asked you for tea, not coffee!" The supervisor yelled at Brooke, he squeezed so hard on the coffee cup that it broke and began to leak.
He tossed the cup to the floor, creating a splash and spraying on Brooke’s clothes. "Clean that mess up! And then get me a fresh cup of tea!"
"Y-Yes sir!" Brooke clenched tightly onto the written order from her supervisor, which clearly stated a coffee.
Ever since she started working at the company, her supervisor had made it his duty to make each passing day a living hell for her.
She arrived at the office kitchen and began making a new cup of tea. The rest of the staff around were clearly looking at her, whispering indiscriminately to one another, probably retelling what had happened at her interview.
Brooke’s heart sunk, ever since that day she hadn’t seen Ethan.
Of course, she knew she couldn’t be lucky to run into the CEO twice in a row. But still, she wanted to see him just to thank him for helping her land the job.
Luther’s evil ambitions were none of her concerns, she wasn’t going to trap a man like her mother did with Luther. She chuckled at the thought of her being able to trap someone, especially someone as influential as Ethan.
She hooked her crutches under her arm pit, placed the tea on a tray and turned to leave. Ever since working at the office, she had become better at maneuvering her crutches. Unfortunately, she was so consumed by her thoughts that she didn’t see someone standing behind her in time to move away.
She crashed her tray of hot tea on the person in front of her, spilling it all over them.
She gasped, "I am so sorry-" she raised her head from the dampened stain on a navy blue suit, all the way to the CEO, who had his eyes pointed at her.
His eyes showed no reaction to the piping hot coffee spilled, instead, they were filled with fascination of seeing her.
The rest of the staff got on their feet immediately, "Mr Halton!" They bowed their head slightly and greeted.
Some even tried to come over and help but he held his palm up, preventing them from coming any closer. He tracked his vision from Brooke’s disheveled hair, to her tired yet watery eyes, traced it to the coffee stains on her wrinkled dress and to the worn out black shoes she had on.
His lips flattened into a smile.
"Brooke, was it?" He asked.
Brooke’s chest tightened, he remembered her. Someone as important as him actually took note of a little person like her.
"I am so sorry, please forgive me. I-I’ll do anything to make it up to you." She bowed her head, her hands shaking in fear, the crutches wobbling.
"Everyone out! Now!" He ordered and in seconds the kitchen area was emptied save for the two of them.
Ethan took two steps forward, Brooke’s heart raced when he reached for her chin and raised it, bringing their eyes to meet.
"You said you’d do anything to make it up to me?" He cracked a grin.
Brooke could only nod, no matter what it was she was determined to keep this job, if she lost it and had to go back to Luther’s agency, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to handle the pain.
Working for Ethan, Cassie wasn’t allowed to hit her, she got to wear nice clothes, even though they were Cassie’s hand me downs, and she most importantly didn’t have to watch her talentless younger sister prance around on set, living her dream of being an actress.
This job was her perfect escape. And she would do anything to keep it...
