Chapter 053 Assassins in the Shadows

In a flash of lightning!

The black shadow lunged forward, and Bai Ye spun around abruptly, his Frostfang sword grasped in hand, sweeping it with force.

The shadow was instantly bisected, falling to the ground before rapidly rejoining and shrinking back.

Without hesitation, Bai Ye advanced, drawing the Dragon's Roar, racking the bolt, and firing at the retreating shadow.

*Bang!*

As the trigger was pulled, the hexagonal muzzle of the Dragon's Roar rotated, and five azure beams of light erupted.

With the single shot, five man-sized craters were blasted into the ground.

The power was undeniable, a testament to future technology. Had it struck a person, it would have likely torn them limb from limb.

However, it had no effect on the shadow, which quickly retracted and vanished into the darkness.

Bai Ye strode forward, quickly realizing this tent-like structure was a hall of mirrors, filled with distorted reflections.

His body stretched, then grotesquely widened, constantly deforming in a comical fashion.

Just then…

As Bai Ye passed a mirror, his reflection did not appear.

Bai Ye reacted decisively, sidestepping and pulling the trigger again.

With a *crash*, accompanied by five energy beams illuminating the surroundings, the mirror shattered into pieces.

"Playing games with me?" Bai Ye raised the Dragon's Roar, pacing forward slowly. "Show yourself again if you dare!"

Although there were overseers outside the structure, the interior was far from safe.

This was a supernatural zone, so it was obvious that forbidden areas here would be infested with bizarre, eerie creatures, desperately trying to kill intruders.

Bai Ye shouted as he continued to advance.

Suddenly, two snake-like shadows reappeared behind Bai Ye, attempting another stealth attack, slowly closing in from behind.

But Bai Ye, as if blessed with eyes in the back of his head, spun around and pulled the trigger.

*Bang!*

The muzzle of the Dragon's Roar swiveled, and five beams once again struck the ground, pulverizing it. The shadows quickly retreated and vanished without a trace.

Bai Ye observed his surroundings closely, perplexed about the nature of those shadows.

In his past life, while he couldn't claim to have seen every monster in the Death Amusement Park, he had encountered at least sixty to seventy percent. In his memory, there were no such shadow-transforming specters.

Musing, Bai Ye began to slowly back away, then suddenly lunged forward, kicking a side glass panel.

The glass instantly shattered, and as it did, two black shadows emerged, only to rapidly recede.

Bai Ye smirked, not feeling any urgency.

He possessed the means to pin them down, and it was simple. If they had been paying attention, they would have noticed that his Frostfang sword, which had been hovering beside him, was now gone.

Bai Ye had utilized the sword's ability, Frost Illusion!

During the first attack, Bai Ye had reacted purely on instinct. Then, he had discovered that the shadow had a physical presence when struck.

A physical presence implied a corporeal form. Therefore, by transforming the sword into frost, he could spread a mist in all directions. As soon as the shadows touched the frost, Bai Ye would detect them.

More than dealing with the shadows, Bai Ye was curious about what they were. After several encounters, he realized they didn't seem to be typical ghosts from the Death Amusement Park.

Lost in thought, Bai Ye slowly surveyed his surroundings. However, his opponent was exceptionally cautious, maintaining a hidden presence and refraining from attacking rashly.

Bai Ye pondered for a moment, then abruptly turned and pulled the trigger again.

The Dragon's Roar unleashed energy beams, shattering another mirror.

The next instant, Bai Ye lowered the gun's muzzle, making a show of replacing the energy crystal.

Wasn't his enemy being cautious?

Caution implied infrequent attacks and a greater value placed on each offensive opportunity.

He would create a vulnerability, a feigned weakness, and see if they could resist the temptation.

Indeed, the moment Bai Ye lowered his gun, two black shadows darted around a mirror and lunged towards him.

Bai Ye looked up, a smile playing on his lips.

He had lured them out!

"Hexagonal Prism Shield!"

A six-sided, transparent shield suddenly materialized in front of Bai Ye, which he promptly grabbed.

*Bang, bang!*

The two shadows collided with the Hexagonal Prism Shield, emitting dull thuds.

The next moment, Bai Ye raised the Dragon's Roar.

He wasn't actually intending to replace the energy crystal!

*Bang!*

The Dragon's Roar fired, its five energy beams spraying forward, shattering the hall of mirrors. A pained scream echoed.

A man, clutching his shoulder, staggered backward. His right arm had been grazed by an energy beam, incinerating it into a bloody, pulpy mess and bone fragments.

"I see!" Bai Ye declared. "People from the superpower world? Those two black shadows must be your abilities, right?"

Bai Ye strode forward, aiming his gun at the man.

The man stared at Bai Ye in terror, shouting, "Don't kill me! If you kill me, you'll be cursed by a spirit! I didn't get a ghost card…"

*Bang!*

Bai Ye ignored him and pulled the trigger.

Five energy beams struck the man's chest, which then exploded outward. His entire chest cavity was obliterated, flesh and blood flying everywhere. Subsequently, his head and lower half of his body landed on the ground.

Then…

Bai Ye froze!

The opponent had been vaporized by a single shot, a level of destruction that surely meant certain death. Yet…

Bai Ye had not obtained a shard of the Divine Stone!

This meant the man had spoken the truth; he hadn't possessed a ghost card and was not a ghost at all.

"What is going on?"

If he wasn't a ghost, why had he attacked him?

At the same moment…

Black smoke rose from behind Bai Ye, slowly coalescing.

The spirit was arriving!

Bai Ye spat on the ground, cursing at the mangled corpse. "What the hell? Not a ghost, so why attack randomly!"

Bai Ye felt he had been set up, inexplicably so. But sometimes, things weren't that complicated. The participant from the superpower world had simply seen Bai Ye before. Like Bai Ye, he had recently arrived in the Red Soil Marsh. He had previously been at Mount Bagua and had entered the Tomb of the King of Huai Nan, knowing Bai Ye possessed a Divine Stone shard.

Given that, trying to kill him was perfectly normal, wasn't it?

Even though killing someone for a human card would come at a price, the Divine Stone shard was an irresistible temptation. And then…

He had doomed himself!

Bai Ye, pure bad luck, cursed and turned to flee, putting distance between himself and the spirit while it was still coalescing.
