Chapter 8 Misfortunes Never Come Singly

*Pfft!*

Bai Ye stepped forward and pulled Ning Shuang from the zombie's head, splattering a spray of foul blood.

He had had enough of his weak body from ten years ago.

Fortunately, he had acquired the T-virus. Once he obtained the T-virus vaccine, he could inject it to improve his body. Moreover, the sudden appearance of zombies had given Bai Ye an idea.

Zombies, put simply, were moving corpses, so they carried a strong stench of decay.

However, if one kept a distance, the smell wasn't that overpowering. The reason was simple: this was an underground base.

Building the base underground meant ventilation was crucial. Since a large number of researchers would be working here long-term, the Umbrella Corporation's underground bases had excellent air circulation systems, naturally equipped with numerous, extensive ventilation ducts.

Lost in thought, Bai Ye quickly entered the restroom and soon found a ventilation duct opening. After removing the grate, Bai Ye tested it; the space was large enough for him to crawl through.

Twisting his body, Bai Ye began to climb through the ventilation duct.

Every time he reached a grate, Bai Ye would observe downwards to confirm his location before continuing forward.

"Pass through the office area quickly; the virus storage room is behind that."

Bai Ye took a deep breath, then withdrew his gaze and continued crawling forward. It was then that Bai Ye suddenly felt something beneath his hand.

Looking down, Bai Ye discovered a pool of viscous liquid, emitting a faint, fishy odor.

"No way!"

Bai Ye's premonition turned grim.

The next instant, a whimpering sound came from ahead in the ventilation duct.

"Alright!" Bai Ye sighed. "It seems bad luck truly has a way of finding you, no matter how you try to avoid it!"

Just around the bend in the ventilation duct ahead of Bai Ye, a hound slowly emerged.

The hound was naturally not alive, but had died long ago. Due to viral infection, it had turned into a zombie dog. Its fur was gone, leaving it bare, with a missing chunk on its body, exposing bone with clinging scraps of flesh.

Man and dog locked eyes for half a second, then the zombie dog suddenly broke into a run, charging towards Bai Ye.

"Ning Shuang, sword control!"

The Ning Shuang sword, floating in front of Bai Ye, immediately transformed into a silver light and shot forward, piercing the zombie dog's head.

The zombie dog let out a howl, then repeatedly slammed against the duct walls, but soon fell silent.

However, just as Bai Ye began to relax, the now silent zombie dog began to move forward again.

How could this be?

Bai Ye was momentarily stunned. Zombies shouldn't be active after their heads were pierced. Then, Bai Ye looked closely. The zombie dog's limbs were not moving; its body was being pushed forward by something.

Bai Ye instantly understood...

It wasn't just one zombie dog!

The zombie dog behind was still running forward, pushing its companion's corpse.

"Ning Shuang!"

Bai Ye quickly whispered, but the Ning Shuang sword, stuck in the zombie dog's head, trembled a few times and stubbornly refused to return.

The Ning Shuang sword was stuck!

"Is this what they call misfortune piling up?"

Bai Ye cursed, drew his handgun, and pulled the trigger towards the front.

Bang, bang, bang...

Gunshots rang out continuously, and blood holes appeared on the zombie dog's corpse, spraying dark blood.

But...

It was useless!

The bullets were not enough to penetrate the corpse and hit the zombie dog behind. Moreover, even if they could penetrate, they might not hit its head.

Just then...

The corpse was finally pushed to Bai Ye's front.

The ventilation duct could only barely accommodate Bai Ye crawling. In this situation, Bai Ye could not turn around and could only use his hands to push against the corpse.

But at that very moment...

A dog's bark. From behind the corpse, a second zombie dog suddenly poked its head out and lunged towards Bai Ye's wrist.

Bai Ye's reflexes were swift; he raised his right hand and smashed its stock into the zombie dog's head, crushing its skull.

But for just a moment, the zombie dog turned its head and persistently prepared to bite Bai Ye again.

"Ice Barrier!"

As Bai Ye shouted, the Ning Shuang sword, still lodged in the zombie dog's head, suddenly emitted a silvery-white glow. Immediately, the surrounding temperature plummeted, and a thick frost mist appeared, freezing the surroundings. An ice wall, perfectly fitted to the ventilation duct, formed in front of Bai Ye.

Bang, bang, bang...

The zombie dog behind, crawling over its companion's corpse, repeatedly slammed against the ice wall with dull thuds.

"There's no other way!"

Bai Ye took a deep breath. It was difficult to proceed further within the ventilation duct.

The ice wall began to grow larger, causing the ventilation duct to warp. Finally, with a "boom," the ventilation duct completely shattered.

Bai Ye fell from the ruptured duct above.

Upon landing, a circle of zombies immediately closed in on Bai Ye.

Bai Ye's face showed little surprise. The commotion in the ventilation duct was so great that the zombies in this area were bound to be attracted by the noise.

Bai Ye quickly got up and directly raised his handgun, resolutely pulling the trigger.

Bang, bang, bang...

At such close range, Bai Ye could not possibly miss. Accompanying the gunshots, the zombies fell one after another.

After emptying his magazine, Bai Ye swiftly leaped onto a table, creating distance while rapidly reloading.

Simultaneously, the Ning Shuang sword returned from the ice wall, transforming back into a flying sword.

"Sword Dance of Frost!"

Sword Dance of Frost: The sword transforms into frost, randomly inflicting freezing, frostbite, or slow effects on targets within a 3-meter radius.

Under Bai Ye's command, the Ning Shuang sword quickly morphed into ice and frost, falling into the zombie horde. A burst of silvery-white frost then exploded outwards.

The surrounding zombies were instantly covered in silver-white frost, their bodies freezing, and their movements slowing down.

Bang, bang, bang...

Bai Ye seized the opportunity, raising his handgun and continuously pulling the trigger.

Blood splattered from the zombies' heads. With the gunshots, they fell one by one.

But at that moment...

*Crackle!*

Above Bai Ye's head, a ventilation duct grate suddenly fell. Immediately after, a zombie dog leaped down, landing on Bai Ye.

After knocking Bai Ye to the ground, the zombie dog opened its jaws to bite Bai Ye's head. Fortunately, Bai Ye reacted quickly enough to turn his head aside, and the zombie dog bit the ground instead.

Then...

*Sizzle!*

A sharp crackle of electricity suddenly rang out!
