Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Evacuation 1
Something happened to the others.
On the other side of the artificial lake, the corpse of the gigantic radiation hermit crab has disappeared, and those Corpse Ghosts that swarmed over are also all gone.
Not only that, but the Corpse Ghosts wandering nearby also seem to have vanished.
"Let’s get out first." Su Ziyu took a deep breath, hoisting a rocket launcher from the corner of the wall. What they lacked the most now was heavy firepower; relying only on conventional firearms couldn’t kill the more powerful monsters. He really didn’t want to engage them in close combat anymore.
Outside, there were many strange traces, remnants of some large creature leaving behind dark red slime.
After running out of the tall building, Su Ziyu and Pasha simultaneously climbed over a collapsed wall, and then they both couldn’t help but gasp. About four or five hundred meters away, there was an enormous, eerie, twisted, terrifying, and indescribable mound of flesh slowly moving.
What kind of monster was that!
Su Ziyu found it hard to describe; its size was colossal, larger than a scrap heavy truck, its entire body composed of a mass of flesh organs. The surface was covered with numerous mutated tumors, and from the bloated body, some limbs had sprouted. Upon closer inspection, they were all human-shaped remnants: Corpse Ghost heads, arms, and torsos extending from the swollen body, appearing to move slightly. This monster was being bombarded by concentrated firepower, but neither firearms, grenades, nor rocket launchers could inflict effective damage.
Bullets to it were like tickling; it moved its massive body forward bit by bit. Though sluggish-looking, its speed wasn’t slow.
The combat personnel left on the ground before were constantly retreating, with their numbers significantly reduced from the start. Relying on cover to widen the distance non-stop, the monster didn’t move using legs; its body oozed forward like a slime, unaffected much by car wrecks or collapsed ruins.
"Detected Corrupted Flesh!"
"Task issued: Eliminate the Corrupted Flesh."
"Task Reward: Authority Level Up! Unlock flesh enhancement related ability permissions!..."
As expected.
The system tasks followed certain rules, often triggered when Su Ziyu encounters a monster.
Its role seemed to be to clean up certain types of unclean entities.
Su Ziyu glanced at the distant giant; those combat personnel were already running far ahead as being pursued by it. The monster seemed to devour anything, not just these humans before it; even Corpse Ghosts approaching it would be attacked. Those corpses became engulfed within, and as more flesh was consumed, its size grew increasingly bloated.
"Do we have any mini nukes left?" Su Ziyu turned to look at Pasha.
No one knew how the monster came to be, but it might be related to the mini nukes fired initially. They had no clue what was happening above, but one look was enough to understand that ordinary weapons couldn’t kill this kind of monster. Probably only mini nukes could blow apart and vaporize its massive body.
"None left," Pasha stood beside him, looking worried and hesitatingly said, "Mini nukes are limited in number and hard to get!"
Then there’s nothing to fight with.
Although Su Ziyu possessed the Time Acceleration ability, it worked well against the radiation Giant, which was merely around three to four meters tall and appeared humanoid. With the Time Acceleration ability, Su Ziyu could attack the radiation Giant’s critical weak points, but this creature seemed unlike anything that could have a fatal weakness. Just looking at it made his scalp tingle, the heads and limbs protruding from the flesh made Su Ziyu feel a bit overwhelmed as if he had trypophobia. If the radiation Giant evoked brutal oppression, this monster seemed to cause mental pollution.
It indeed had a bit of ’indescribable horror’!
"Let’s move. Do you have a communication device?" Su Ziyu shook his head, "Tell them to evacuate. The monster’s speed isn’t very fast; they should be able to find a way to escape."
"Without a nuke, we simply can’t kill it."
The rockets could only blow off some of the flesh and corpses on it; perhaps with a hundred shots simultaneously, it might be severely damaged, but with just the two rounds that Su Ziyu and Pasha held, it definitely wasn’t enough.
"Are you crazy? Can we really take down that kind of monster?"
"Isn’t our most important mission now to take out the ’Bionic Human Plan’ data?" said a woman wearing protective gear who climbed up next to them.
Until now, Su Ziyu didn’t know her name; during the ride, she was rather aloof and never talked to him.
"Let’s go." Pasha glanced at the data disk she had, speaking in a deep voice.
She was right.
The most important task right now was indeed to bring the Bionic Human Plan data out.
"We’ll go from this side."
"Let’s leave Southern Cross first; there’s an armored vehicle we have prepared over there." Pasha put down the rocket launcher.
The monster had been lured away.
Carrying the thing was inconvenient; they had to admit these teammates were quite competent as they hadn’t left the monster near this building.
The three quickly started retreating.
Pasha found something resembling a communication device and spoke a few words, unsure if they were heard, but the monster had now been baited away around eight hundred meters.
Along the way, Su Ziyu didn’t encounter any Corpse Ghost.
Whether they had been all killed at first, or attracted by the monster, they traveled very calmly, only encountering about ten radiation rats gnawing on Corpse Ghost corpses.
Soon.
They arrived at the starting point of the battle, crossing a section of the outer ruins, and from afar saw a bunch of parked armored vehicles.
"Something’s wrong."
"An armored vehicle has been driven away," Pasha slightly frowned.
Su Ziyu took a glance and knew, speaking softly, "Maybe someone evacuated ahead of us. Let’s leave quickly as well."
The three selected an armored vehicle, moving some supplies over.
The other armored vehicles stayed untouched; if those people managed to escape, they would need these vehicles to evacuate.
Su Ziyu took off his protective gear, feeling stuffy wearing it for too long. Pasha was driving; he felt fatigued and needed some rest.
"Hi. My name is Zoe," the woman wearing protective gear walked over, reaching out her hand.
"Su Ziyu. You can call me Su," Su Ziyu didn’t shake her hand, his tone rather cold.
This woman looked around twenty-six or seven years old, with a relatively stern yet elegant appearance, high-spirited, quite aloof, sporting short hair, with traits somewhat typical of Eastern European descent. They hadn’t interacted when they came, but now she took the initiative to talk to Su Ziyu.
