But what could he do? She was his girlfriend's mother; he couldn't possibly stop her.
In fact, Liu Yilin's mother had come specifically to prevent Ning Beichen and Liu Yilin from being together.
So, Ning Beichen was also very sensible. As long as Liu Yilin didn't go out or venture into dangerous places, he would try to stay out of her sight to avoid causing trouble.
Although he had no experience dealing with a mother-in-law, he knew how difficult a crazy one could be. The key was that this woman, who wasn't his mother-in-law, had already decided he was interested in her daughter and wouldn't listen to any explanations.
"Daughter, I'm telling you, there are plenty of good men in this world. Don't let a momentary impulse make you regret your entire life."
In a restaurant, Liu Yilin's mother was earnestly persuading her daughter.
"Mom, what's wrong with you today? You seem a bit strange. Why are you telling me this?"
Liu Yilin was eating when she heard her mother's words and found them odd. She didn't know her mother had already met Ning Beichen and was infuriated by him. Now, her mother was planning to break them up.
"Daughter, I'm telling you to be discerning, not everyone is a good man. You need to guard against men with ulterior motives and not be deceived by their looks or sweet talk."
Liu Yilin's mother said to her.
"Mom, I know. I'm not a three-year-old."
Liu Yilin replied.
"Daughter, don't think I'm nagging. You're still young and don't understand the treachery of human hearts. You need to learn to see through people, especially men. Mom is doing this for your own good."
Liu Yilin's mother kept circling the topic, reminding her daughter repeatedly, implying she should stay away from Ning Beichen.
However, Liu Yilin had no idea what her mother was implying. She felt confused, only nodding foolishly, wondering why her mother was acting so strangely today and suddenly talking about such things.
"Okay, Mom, I understand."
Liu Yilin finally replied.
"It's good that you understand. If you understand, you must listen to your mother, do you hear me?"
Liu Yilin's mother was delighted, thinking her daughter had taken her words to heart and still listened to her.
"Hmph! Ning Beichen, you want to have my daughter? You're dreaming!"
Liu Yilin's mother thought to herself.
After lunch, Liu Yilin expected her mother to leave. To her surprise, what had happened in the morning repeated itself; her mother continued to act like a queen, guarding her in her office.
"Mom, aren't you going home?"
Facing her peculiar mother, Liu Yilin was no longer troubled, but suffering from a headache.
"No, I'll wait for you to finish work and go home together."
Liu Yilin's mother replied.
"Mom, it's not necessary. After work, Ning Beichen will take me home."
Liu Yilin said.
However, this statement instantly made her mother tense up and even more unwilling to leave.
"No, I'll wait for you to finish work and leave with you."
Liu Yilin couldn't understand why her mother was acting so strangely all day, but she couldn't refuse her and had to let her stay.
It wasn't until after work that Ning Beichen came to pick up Liu Yilin.
Following her usual habit, Liu Yilin was about to get into the passenger seat. But before she could, her mother grabbed her and pulled her to the back seat, then glared at Ning Beichen with eyes like she was warding off a wolf.
"Mom, are you okay? Is there something you're hiding from me?"
Liu Yilin was bewildered by her mother's behavior, feeling that her mother was acting increasingly bizarre.
Suddenly, Liu Yilin thought of something. Seeing her mother's sudden tension, she quickly grabbed her mother's hand and asked,
"Mom, you... you tell me, you... you don't have an incurable disease, do you?"
"You unfilial daughter! How can you curse your own mother like that?"
Liu Yilin's mother was almost scared to death by her words.
"You don't? That's good, that's good. Mom, you scared me to death. You've been acting strange all day, I thought you..."
Liu Yilin said happily, relieved.
Ning Beichen, driving in the front, almost slammed on the brakes and crashed into a wall upon hearing her words.
"You wretched girl, can't Mom care about you? Mom doesn't want you to be deceived by a man."
As she said this, Liu Yilin's mother deliberately glanced at Ning Beichen, with a look that said, "See? I'm talking about you. Get lost quickly and leave my daughter alone."
Ning Beichen avoided his mother-in-law's threatening gaze and focused on driving, ignoring her threat. He wasn't actually trying to become her son-in-law; it was none of his business what she thought.
"Mom, you're saying this again. I've told you, I'm not a child anymore. I have my own judgment and won't be easily deceived."
Liu Yilin said with a headache.
"Who knows? Some people are wolves in sheep's clothing. They see young girls with money and deliberately try to deceive them. You must never be with someone like that, daughter."
Liu Yilin's mother was almost explicitly calling Ning Beichen such a person.
"Mom, I don't even have a boyfriend right now, who would deceive me!"
"Besides, I'm very busy now and have no time for romance."
Liu Yilin replied. Even now, she hadn't realized who her mother was talking about.
However, her response was interpreted completely differently by her mother. She only thought her daughter was still hiding things from her and assumed she didn't know about her and Ning Beichen.
There had been reports from entertainment media before, but she hadn't paid much attention, thinking her daughter, who was always so picky, wouldn't get involved with a mere bodyguard. She assumed those gossip reporters were just making things up for traffic.
But when she learned from her younger daughter that Liu Yilin liked that bodyguard, she immediately became unsettled.
She then secretly observed them and found that her daughter's relationship with that bodyguard seemed truly unusual.
Moreover, the bodyguard lived under the same roof, they went to and from work together, ate meals together, and even sat in the front passenger seat when traveling together. There was no sign of a boss and bodyguard relationship at all; they looked like a couple.
Then, she heard some gossip about her daughter and Ning Beichen from Liu Yilin's company.
In fact, Ning Beichen himself was blinded by proximity and didn't think much of it.
Liu Yilin's attitude towards him was clearly not that of a superior to a subordinate, which naturally led people in the company to speculate.
Yet, the two individuals involved didn't take it seriously.
Liu Yilin thought, how could she possibly be with Ning Beichen? This guy had ulterior motives; she'd be lucky to get rid of him.
Ning Beichen had no such intentions either. He was purely there to protect Liu Yilin. As for him trying to chop icebergs with an axe, forget it! He had no such interest or hobby.
