Chapter 25 The Downpour

Although it is currently the rainy season, the weather is changing far too quickly.

A cold wind blew, and I shivered, quickly putting up the fence and returning to the campfire.

Even though I had already built a fence to block the wind, I didn't know why this cave was so extremely cold.

We were all dressed in summer clothes, completely lacking in any ability to ward off the cold.

The only military coat that could resist the cold was now covered in mud and blood, and it was itself an old item from decades ago, carrying a natural scent of decay.

We could only spread it on the ground as a cushion to sit on.

The wind occasionally blew into the cave, and we could only huddle close to the fire.

What a waste of the afternoon. If this rain didn't stop before sunset, we would have to eat the leftover fruits and seafood from yesterday for dinner.

But fortunately, we had all just finished eating.

If we could just endure it, getting through tonight would not be a problem.

Since I had nothing else to do, I was lost in thought, while the women over there sat around the campfire chatting.

We had been on the island for a few days now, and the problems of survival and the confusion about the future constantly plagued everyone. Now that we finally had some downtime, everyone seemed to be in high spirits.

Guan Hai'er suddenly steered the conversation towards me, "Hey, Lili sister, what was Ye Ge like at the company before? Was he particularly capable at work!"

Pan Lili was a bit unsure how to answer Guan Hai'er's question. I also felt a bit awkward. Was I supposed to tell Guan Lili that she used to be my girlfriend, and then she cheated on me?

Shangguan Yao quickly smoothed things over from the side, "Lu Ziye was highly valued at the company. He is very capable at work and also very enthusiastic, so he is someone I think highly of."

This Shangguan Yao is really good at lying. Back at the company, she never even gave me a second glance, and after several months of employment, we hadn't even spoken a few words. Now, she was claiming to be someone she thought highly of.

Guan Hai'er, upon hearing this, playfully hit my arm and teased, "Ye brother, I didn't expect you to be so modest! If Shangguan Yao hadn't said so, I wouldn't have known you were so outstanding in the workplace."

Pan Lili, seeing Guan Hai'er and me being so close, couldn't help but feel a bit jealous. Seeing that I looked a bit tired, she quickly tried to appease me by saying, "Lu Ziye, are you tired? Shall I give you a massage?"

I now ignored all of Pan Lili's solicitous inquiries.

Where was this concern before? After she cheated on me and then found out I was better than Li Degui, she rushed to curry favor with me. Is there such a good thing in the world?

Luo Yaqin looked disdainfully at Li Degui, who was shrinking in a corner as if he had already fallen asleep, and frowned, "I don't know how this Li Degui managed to stay in your company before. He's nothing. Is he a kept man?"

Shangguan Yao, who had been listening, was about to retort when she seemed to recall something.

With a gloomy expression, she simply said not to speak like that, then returned to her sleeping spot, no longer speaking.

We chatted a bit more. Seeing that Shangguan Yao, the woman I disliked, was no longer participating in the conversation, I also opened up. A few consecutive jokes had Guan Hai'er and Luo Yaqin in stitches.

When night fell, we finished our remaining food and lay down to sleep. The rain outside continued to pour down incessantly, pattering non-stop.

When I woke up again, I didn't know what time it was, but I could hear that the rain outside had not stopped; instead, it had gotten heavier than before I fell asleep.

I pushed aside the fence and looked outside, my expression turning grim.

The sky was completely shrouded in dark clouds, and the torrential rain seemed to be falling like free money. Looking into the distance, everything was enveloped in mist, and the sea level even seemed to have risen a bit.

The others who had woken up next to me were also quite panicked.

Luo Yaqin counted our food and said with a heavy heart, "We only have enough food for half a day. If this rain doesn't stop, we'll run out of food very soon."

Shangguan Yao's face turned pale as a sheet upon hearing this, "Then we really have no choice, are we just going to be trapped and die in this cave?"

Luo Yaqin looked at the intensity of the rain outside and shook her head, "With this kind of rain, let alone going out to find food, it's questionable whether we can even get out of this rainforest."

Guan Hai'er poked at the campfire, "There's not much firewood left either. This fire might not last until tonight."

The wind blowing in from the cave entrance grew stronger, and the temperature dropped by several degrees.

Pan Lili sat on the ground hugging her knees, murmuring in despair, "Then we're all finished!"

Everyone fell into despair for a moment.

Seeing everyone's reaction, I picked up the military coat from the ground and threw it on.

"Everyone, please be quiet for a moment. I'll be back. I'm going to find food!"

Luo Yaqin grabbed my clothes as I was about to walk out and said to me anxiously, "Are you crazy? Going out in such heavy rain, you might not come back."

I firmly pushed her hand away, "In this cave, excluding the useless Li Degui, I am the only man! Staying here is just waiting to die, so I might as well go out and try my luck."

Saying this, I put on my raincoat and stepped outside, disregarding Luo Yaqin's attempts to stop me.

The rain looked fierce when viewed from inside the cave, but actually being in it felt like being shot by bullets.

The visibility was less than five meters, and everything was a blur.

I stumbled forward, holding up the military coat, and felt my way cautiously.

With this rain, there was no way I'd find food in the forest. I could only try my luck at the seaside.

After an unknown amount of time, my entire body was soaked through, and I finally reached the coast.

The turbulent waves of the sea rolled in, making me smile wryly.

Is it really the heavens that want to destroy Lu Ziye!

With such a rough sea, even walking along the shore was extremely dangerous, let alone trying to catch fish.

Now, all the hope of the people in the cave rests on me. If I return empty-handed, I fear we will only face starvation!

In despair, I knelt by the sea, when suddenly I felt something flash past. I quickly raised my head.

It's real!

I saw a white light in the water swimming rapidly towards the shore!
